Yesterday we traveled the new Puerto Escondido/Oaxaca City hwy from the coast but we overheated about 1/3 of the way up to the summit. That first climb goes up to around 6,000′ in about 40 miles of road. That and in over 90 degree temps. We had to pull over when the engine started to shut down from the hot transmission and that spot was not the best, right after we came out of a tunnel.
Grateful for the common practice here in Mexico of drivers passing warning oncoming drivers by flashing their headlights several times. It was very helpful for us, also, because there were 2 bad accidents on the road that day and in each case we were warned by oncoming drivers.
BTW, after we cooled her down for 30 minutes we went on with caution but made it the rest of the way to our destination…
The following photos are from our trip from Bahia de san Agustin, Huatulco on the coast up the new autopista to where it ends a bit before Oaxaca City. The autopista begins at photo #7.
