They Say, “A Journey Begins With A Single Step”
Although the vision of living and traveling in Mexico has been on our radars for decades, we’ve really just begun making plans and taking solid steps around 3 years ago. Since then, we’ve spent hundreds of hours watching YouTube videos, doing research and interacting on forums for ex-pats living and traveling in Mexico…and full time RVing groups.
The first step really was to get our passports in order. In earlier decades we did not need passports to travel in Mexico so never bothered to get ours. We had to clear a few hurdles with name changes and missing birth certificates in order to get it done and it’s literally taken us months, even paying for the “expedited” passport service… Sometime in October this should be a done deal (one has arrived, the other is in progress).
The other BIG part has been saving enough money for the RV and traveling expenses including equipment to make sure we can continue to work online anywhere there is decent cell phone service. During 2019 we had a very slow year with business and then, of course, the whole covid thing hit and our main business was really throttled…it serves the hospitality/travel sector.
So we cinched in our belts (literally, I’ve lost 60 lbs) and slashed expenses, did a bunch of marketing and as soon as business started picking up we started socking away money…a few hundred here, a thousand there. It’s been slow but steady.
We really need around $15000 to do it all but if we keep saving and can liquidate our jewelry and herbal salve businesses and after the RV is purchased and gets a thorough mechanical inspection we can also sell the Prius for around $2200.
So, this is why we’re reaching out for some support from friends, neighbors, dreamers and potential blog and video subscribers of the future. (For more future blogging and video efforts see “The Vision”)
Here are details about the used RV we have researched as the best for our needs:
Class C
Newer than 1990
Under 30′
Bed in front and bed in back
Has been well maintained
Has NOT been lived in
No leaks
We will need to have the vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic and then pay for any needed repairs or things like new tires.
We’ve seen vehicles like this in the price range of $8000 and up. We are looking for a vehicle that is under $12000.
