I was especially captivated by the little felt axolotl toys created by a man who I had a great conversation with. He can create these in any color you would like and in 2 sizes. The species of axolotles that live in Lake Patzcuaro are not found anywhere else on earth. They are quite amazing and magical creatures and the artisan told me this local story about them:
“Once a year, right before Dia de los Muertos, the axolotlis come out of the lake, onto the shore, and make little sounds with their mouths. The indigenous Purépecha people believe that the axolotlis are communicating for the ancestors who live at the bottom of the lake, that they are the messengers between these worlds.”
